Organizing with Categories
Categories help you navigate books by broad topics like Fiction, Theology, or Children’s. Every book is automatically assigned categories based on its metadata—you don’t have to tag them yourself.

Categories vs. Tags
Section titled “Categories vs. Tags”Categories and tags both organize books, but they work differently:
| Categories | Tags | |
|---|---|---|
| Who manages them | Agathos Books and library admins | You |
| Scope | Platform-wide or library-wide | Your personal collection |
| Examples | Fiction, Theology, Biography | ”gift-from-mom”, “book-club-2025” |
Use categories to discover books; use tags for your own organization. See Using tags for more.
Library-Specific Tags
Section titled “Library-Specific Tags”Library admins can create custom tags for their collection—for example, “Pastor’s Picks” or “Kids Area.” These appear alongside platform categories when you filter within that library.
- Combine filters to narrow down: category + availability + your own tags
- If you’re not finding a book in a category you expect, check related categories (e.g., “History” and “Biography” often overlap)
